Prior Authorization Specialist

Reports to: Billing Manager

Summary:

The Prior Authorization Specialist is responsible for obtaining the necessary prior authorizations for all facility and provider orders by successfully completing the authorization process with all insurance payers.  The Prior Authorization Specialist maintains a high level of understanding of insurance companies and billing authorization requirements.

Essential Duties:

  • Receive requests for prior authorization via the schedule and ensure that they are properly organized and prioritized.
  • Review chart documentation to ensure patient meets medical policy guidelines.
  • Contact insurance carriers to obtain benefit coverage, policy limitations, and authorization for patients.  This information may be obtained using the carrier’s website or by phone.
  • Maintain individual payer files to include up to date requirements needed to successfully obtain authorizations.
  • Initiate appeals for denied authorizations
  • Respond to clinic questions regarding payer medical policy guidelines and collaborate with managers as needed to provide account status updates and coordinate the resolution of issues
  • Ensures all services have prior authorization and coordinates peer to peer review if required
  • Confirm accuracy of CPT and ICD-10 diagnoses in the order
  • Meets daily productivity and quality standards associated with the job requirements
  • Other duties as assigned

Demonstrates the primary goal of efficiently providing surgical services that exceed customer expectations and improve clinical and financial operations. Direct patient care and supportive services will be provided under registered nurse supervision.

                  This individual is responsible for working with the operating room registered nurse to maintain a safe, surgical intervention for the patient by practicing proper aseptic technique and by using a good working knowledge of the procedure by anticipating the surgeon’s needs in performing the procedure.

                  Responsible for proper room set up, proficient in sterile technique, preparing sterile field with proper instrumentation, assisting the surgeon during case, maintaining sharps and instrument counts, and assisting with room turnover.

                  Also, responsible for decontamination and sterile processing of instruments and trays according to policies and procedures. Ensures sterility of instruments and trays. Assists with maintaining adequate inventory of supplies.

                  Education and Experience:

                  •  High school graduate.
                  • One or more years of related work experience in operating room preferred.
                  • Must have CST (Certified Surgical Technologist) or completed an accredited surgical technology program.

                  JOB SUMMARY: This individual is responsible for decontamination and sterile processing of OR instruments and trays according to policies and procedures. Ensures sterility of instruments and trays prior to procedures.

                  Responsibilities:

                  a. Assists in preparing operating room for planned procedure.

                  b. Handles surgical instruments per facility policy.

                  c. Keeps all working areas clean, neat and stocked.

                  d. Assists with preparation of operating room for surgical cases.

                  e. Observes strict aseptic technique throughout the entire sterile processing.

                  f. Isolates “dirty” or contaminated instruments and supplies to minimize the spread of infection.

                  g. Helps clean the room following a procedure by caring for instruments, supplies and equipment used in the sterile field.

                  h. Understands and follows manufacturer’s instructions for cleaning and decontaminating reusable surgical instrumentation and equipment.

                  i. Wraps and packages instruments and trays in sub-sterile area.

                  j. Understands and uses appropriately: cidex, biological indicators, integrating indicators, bowie dick test pack and challenge packs.

                  k. Properly documents cycles and reviews all autoclave printouts.

                  l. Other duties as assigned

                  EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

                  1. High school graduate.

                  2. One or more years of related work experience in sterile processing department preferred.

                  3. Certified or willing to obtain cerfitication within 1 year.
